You do not need to decide whether to hire an agent before you know which parts of the order you need help with. First establish who can place and pay for the order, receive the goods, check them and arrange delivery to your destination. Choose a service that fills the gaps.

For the complete purchasing sequence, start with our first-order plan. This guide focuses on choosing between purchasing assistance and a narrower forwarding service.

Check what you can do yourself

Open the actual listing and write down the product, variations, quantity and destination. Can you understand the specification and confirm it with the seller? Can your account use an available payment method? Is there an agreed receiving address, and who handles the next leg of transport?

Overseas purchasing does not automatically require someone else to make the payment. WorldFirst’s official help describes paying for 1688 orders using World Pay and a WorldFirst balance. That establishes a direct-payment option; it does not confirm your eligibility, every order’s acceptance or an international shipping service. Check the conditions shown for your account before relying on it.

Compare the responsibilities, not the service label

Purchase yourself with an available delivery option

Seller communication, order and payment

Destination coverage, inspections and returns

Purchase yourself and use a warehouse or forwarder

Order, payment and inbound parcel references

Receiving, checking, storage, consolidation and onward transport

Use purchasing or sourcing assistance

A clear brief and approvals

Which tasks the agent accepts, fees and after-sales responsibility

A warehouse may receive and forward parcels without checking the contents. A purchasing helper may order an item but leave international shipping to you. Ask for the scope in writing rather than assuming the word “agent” includes everything.

Small orders need a complete quote

Request goods, domestic delivery, service charges, inspection, storage, packing and onward shipping as separate lines, with anything bundled clearly marked. Check the payment currency, exchange rate, minimum fee and excluded destination costs. Use the same product and service requirements for every quote.

For illustration only, goods at CNY 200 plus domestic delivery of CNY 15, assistance of CNY 20, inspection and packing of CNY 15, and international transport of CNY 160 add up to CNY 410. This is an invented calculation, not a market quote. Payment, currency conversion, import and other unquoted charges are not included.

Enter your own numbers in the sourcing cost worksheet. Keep unknown costs visible; do not turn a blank quote into zero.

Ask what happens if the order changes
