Why Your 1688 Shipping Quote Changed After Packing

A changed shipping quote needs a line-by-line explanation. Compare the original assumptions with the final packed shipment: number of cartons, gross weight, external dimensions, service and extra charges. A higher bill alone does not tell you which input changed.

Use this checklist before you authorize dispatch. It is designed to help you request evidence, not to justify an unexplained charge.

Ask for the final measurements

Request the carton count and each carton’s external length, width, height and gross weight. Ask when they were measured and whether the quote covers the same destination and service as before. Product weight excludes some or all shipping packaging; establish which weight each quote used.

When several suppliers are involved, reconcile arrivals first. A quote for three received parcels is not comparable with an earlier estimate for two. Our consolidation guide explains how to keep those records together.

Check the billing rule for the selected service

DHL Express UK’s measuring guide shows a volumetric-weight calculation using length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5,000. It explains that a large, light parcel may be priced using volumetric weight. This is a named carrier example, not a universal rule for every 1688 agent, forwarder or shipping line.

Ask your provider for its actual divisor, rounding increments, minimum charge and treatment of multiple cartons. Some quotes may use a different method; do not substitute the DHL example for the agreed rule.

A worked example

Illustrative inputs: a carton measures 50 × 40 × 30 cm and weighs 6 kg. With a divisor of 5,000, its volumetric weight is 60,000 ÷ 5,000 = 12 kg. If the quoted service bills the higher of actual and volumetric weight, the base chargeable weight would be 12 kg before applying that service’s other billing rules.

If a proposed repack reduces the carton to 45 × 35 × 25 cm, the same calculation gives 7.875 kg. That is not a guaranteed billed weight or saving: the provider still needs to confirm safe packing, final measurements, rounding and any repacking charge.

Request a revision before release

Please explain the difference between quote [reference] and the packed-shipment quote. Provide carton count, gross weight, external dimensions, billing method and a breakdown of added charges. If you propose repacking or splitting, please quote the complete alternative, including handling charges, before dispatch.

Compare the complete revised totals in the cost worksheet. Do not remove protective packaging solely to reduce dimensions without considering what the goods need during transport.

Common questions

Does a lighter parcel always cost less?

Not under every billing method. Compare the selected service’s chargeable weight and other charges, not only the scale reading.

Is splitting always cheaper?

Request both quotes. Separate packages may change minimum charges, handling and destination costs. There is no universal saving in this guide.

Can I use another buyer’s price per kilogram?

Only as a question to investigate. A different date, destination, box size, service or product may make the comparison unsuitable.
